You’d think that losing their best friend might bring Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline (Candice Accola) closer together, but the opposite seems to be the case when The Vampire Diaries returns tomorrow with its Season 6 premiere. What did Nina have to tease about Elena and Caroline’s new frenemy-ship?

“There are a lot of things that are straining their relationship,” Nina told TV Guide. “The fact that they can’t go to Mystic Falls, the fact that Elena is in denial, but there’s also [Caroline's] friendship with Stefan straining things.”

The site also teased that Caroline will make “a shocking discovery about her BFF by the end of the premiere that further complicates things.” Yikes! We knew things were awkward between these two from this Season 6 premiere sneak peek, but we didn’t realize it was going to get worse.

But there is hope on the horizon! Nina said: “At the end of the day, they do care about each other so they’re trying to pull each other out of their conflict.” Yeah, these two have been through so much together — and have collectively and individually lost so much. We can’t imagine them not being in one another’s lives. Or ever giving up on their friendship.
